Helping kids in one of the most dangerous regions in the world
The Democratic Republic of Congo has been ravaged by violent conflicts for decades. More than 6 million people have died as a result of these wars, and although the so-called Congo War was declared ended in 2003, the violence has continued in the east, and innocent people are killed every day, with almost no acknowledgement from the rest of the world. Mass rapes, killings, torture, displacement, enlistment of children into the militias are all common occurrences. In the midst of all this horror, there are courageous Congolese people who dedicate their lives to helping the victims: Passy Mahano is one of these people.
Passy's kids are all victims of these terrible conflicts. They range in age from newborn babies, whose mothers died in childbirth, to 15 years. Passy gave up her studies in order to provide a home for them, but they were living in a particularly dangerous area, where armed groups roam the streets. Our initial goal was to provide a safe and happy home for the children in a more secure area in the world famous Virunga Park. Stage 1 of the project has been completed - the first dormitory has been constructed, the second in in progress, and the children have all moved into their new, safer home at Rumangabo.

Renting and equipping two buildings in the town of Rutshuru as dormitories for 32 high school children from the orphanage, so they can go to school there and not return to Rugari for their education. The situation in Rugari is extremely dangerous: armed clashes between local militias and government forces have left many dead and injured, and hundreds have been forced to flee. We care about their education, and we care about their safety.
